Tottenham Hotspur signed Omar Marmoush from Manchester City to complete a double swoop of talented forwards from Manchester City, and while the Citizens stealing away Iliman Ndiaye soured the end of the transfer window for Spurs, it should not be forgotten that they had an amazing window overall, particularly when it comes to the attacking positions.
Marmoush and Savio are arguably the best attackers Spurs have fielded in the last two seasons since prime Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich and Son Heung-min began his decline while both James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski were slowed by injuries.
Savio had a scintillating debut off the bench in the League Cup against Charlton Athletic, but when considering the quality of the opposition and how atrocious Spurs played as a whole, Marmoush's Tottenham debut in a 2-0 loss to Newcastle United was actually arguably as impressive.
Omar Marmoush will have a lot more help going forward
Marmoush created three chances and had three dribbles completed, and the score line should have been different because the Egyptian international did win a penalty that was unfairy not called. So that should be a feather in his cap, too.
What makes Omar Marmoush's performance all the more impressive, unfortunately, is how badly the attackers around him played. Not only did Pedro Porro drop another stinker as a right winger, which was a baffling personnel decision on Roberto De Zerbi's part, but Mathys Tel played the worst game of his career on Saturday afternoon against Newcastle.
Tel lost the ball almost every time he touched it, and he just would not get rid of the football and pass it to his teammates. Marmoush had to deal with a left winger who was basically playing against the team, so poor was Tel in all phases. The Bayern Munich man just was not mentally at it against the Magpies, and yet Marmoush still managed to present a clear danger to the opposition, picking up the creative and dribbling slack from his younger teammate.
Obviously, Mathys Tel cannot be this putrid in his future performances on the left wing, and even more to the point, he won't be the regular starter going forward either. Tottenham Hotspur are expected to play Marmoush's old Manchester City friend Savio on the left wing and then Mohammed Kudus on the right wing when everyone is healthy, and even if they don't, they could play Marmoush himself on the left and Dominic Solanke in the middle.
Whatever the case, it is not going to be that difficult out there for Marmoush going forward, and that will give Tottenham fans even more optimism heading into a must win Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest.
