Tottenham Hotspur took the lead over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after a bizarre Mike Penders punch into his own net, but the real moment of quailty for the Lilywhite attack occurred roughly 10 minutes later, courtesy of another lung busting run on the ball from the left flank by none other than Mathys Tel.

Once again, Tel was the most dangerous attacker on the pitch for Tottenham, making his return to the starting lineup after what has been almost two months away from the 11 itself. But once again, prior to the goal, Tel was getting stick from some Spurs fans on social media for looking a bit sloppy and inefficient on the ball.

Even though Tel was one of the Premier League leaders in terms of dribbles completed prior to his banishment from the starting lineup, he got sent packing from the 11 because he could not create or get into scoring situations; he was hoarding a lot of the ball but not doing anything with it, which came at a huge detriment to his teammates.

Mathys Tel has moments of magic in him

Now, a few of those teammates, namely strikers Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush have not been anything to write home about themselves. And after Marmoush was yanked after a poor performance at the starting streak in the stead of Big Dom, Tel scoring his brilliant solo goal with a fine, driven finish into the bottom left corner meant that much more.

Even before the brilliant goal, which Tel has been known to pull out of his back pocket from time to time, the French left winger was having a strong game against the Chelsea back line. Tel had two key passes and four dribbles completed in the 2-0 road win, putting in his best statistical performance since the 3-0 loss to Brentford on Matchday 1 - except, of course, this match was doubly sweeter for Tel because he both scored and Tottenham Hotspur won.

Mathys Tel was insanely good in the preseason and had a positive first full season with Tottenham in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. He has done more good than bad for Tottenham, and this win over Chelsea and his goal were reminders of how much he can help this team.

After what he did and with how little the other forwards truly did to threaten the Chelsea defense, Tel has made sure Roberto De Zerbi can't leave him out of the starting lineup again next week vs. Crystal Palace.
