Tottenham Hotspur center back Luka Vuskovic had a breakout season for the ages, rating as arguably the best player in his position in European football in just his first campaign as a senior player. Vuskovic was a huge reason why Hamburg were not at threat of relegation back to the Bundesliga, and he wowed veteran Bundesliga pundits with his maturity and quality.
And is peers are adding to the hype train, too. Bundesliga players vote on a ranking for their Bundesliga Player of the Season every year in the magazine Kicker, and iMiaSanMia shared the surprising results.
Even though former Tottenham star Harry Kane was scoring goals for fun and setting records as the current Ballon d'Or favorite, the English international actually on ranked fourth by the 199 players who voted. His teammate on the right wing, Michael Olise, actually came in first, which is a valid thought, and his other teammate on the left wing, Luis Diaz, was fifth.
Luka Vuskovic is more than just hype
Sandwiched in between Olise and Kane, again both Ballon d'Or contenders, were RB Leipzig's phenom winger Yan Diomande - a one time pipe dream transfer target for Tottenham - and then Mr. Luka Vuskovic in third. So 199 Bundesliga players came to the consensus that Vuskovic had a better season than Kane.
That is a huge, huge feather in Vuskovic's cap. It is very rare that a teenage center back gets ranked above a 32 year old legendary striker in a season in which that striker scored 36 goals in 31 appearances with some of the best all around play we have ever seen from the position.
But that shows you just how highly rated Vuskovic is. Now, he and Yan Diomande probably did not deserve to be ranked above Kane, but for those, like these players, who actually followed the Bundesliga every week, it's not actually as ridiculous of an opinion as it would seem from a mainstream view.
Although Tottenham fans have to be careful not to hype Vuskovic more than they should since he is still young and growing, it's things like this, such as a vote from players themselves, that show you that Vuskovic's amazing Bundesliga season is not at all just hype. This young man is a truly special player and potentially the best center back prospect we have seen this generation, and if even Harry Kane is getting snubbed for the Croatian international, Spurs need to make good on his quality.
