Hamburg star center back Luka Vuskovic may have just played his last game at home for the Bundesliga side, soaking in a well deserved ovation in the final minutes of a 3-2 upset victory over Freiburg, who will soon be in the Europa League Final against Aston Villa. Tottenham Hotspur currently own the right to Vuskovic, but his future next season is entirely unclear.
Tottenham probably thought they would have at least a year to make any decisions on Vuskovic, who seemed to be intent on staying at Hamburg for another season to play with his brother. But not only are reports out of Germany singing a different tune, but now Vuskovic himself seems to be hinting at a different plan for the 2026/27 season than Hamburg.
After the win over Freiburg, Luka Vuskovic spoke to the media and admitted that he probably isn't going to be playing for Hamburg next season. The Croatian center back said, via Tottenham Tiers, “In football, you never know, but the chances are very, very, very slim.”
Tottenham need to keep Luka Vuskovic
So if Vuskovic isn't going to stay at Hamburg for one more season and prolong his ultimate decision, Tottenham Hotspur are under that much more pressure in the summer transfer window. Vuskovic is already reportedly in talks with Barcelona, and both the Blaugrana and Bayern Munich are interested in signing the teenage star - and they are two of the three biggest clubs on the planet. And those are just the clubs we know for sure are interested in Vuskovic; if word gets out he is interested in other buyers, more will be on the way.
Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange is working hard to keep Vuskovic and sign him to a new bumper deal with higher wages, and Spurs are going to have to do that if they want any shot at Vuskovic staying for the 2026/27 season, in addition to staying up in the Premier League this season.
Cristian Romero's future is up in the air, and Tottenham may also have to sacrifice him in order to keep Vuskovic. Because the best shot they have of keeping Vuskovic, besides proving they have a better sporting project under Roberto De Zerbi than they did last year, is to guarantee him regular playing time and an opportunity to shine he can't get elsewhere. Vuskovic is already a star - not just a future star - and Tottenham cannot miss the opportunity to have him.
