Even though Lucas Bergvall is busy with the Swedish national team at the 2026 World Cup, he still submitted a transfer request away from Tottenham Hotspur behind the scenes amidst Spurs efforts to sign the defensive midfield duo of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes from other English clubs.
Bergvall is one of the biggest gems at Tottenham, but both and Luka Vuskovic appear to be wanting out in order to get regular starts elsewhere. The young Swede had a poor 2025/26 season, but he was blighted by injury and manager Thomas Frank, who refused to play him in the right position.
According to a report from Matt Verri of the London Standard, the main impetus behind the transfer request from Bergvall is the position he is playing in. Bergvall feels he is not going to get the right opportunities under the new manager Roberto De Zerbi, and he is frustrated by the lack of minutes given to him in his preferred best position as a No. 8 in midfield. Per Verri, multiple clubs have already reached out to Tottenham with interest.
Lucas Bergvall does not trust Tottenham
Lucas Bergvall is only 20 years old and was a standout in the 2024/25 season when Spurs won the Europa League. He is a special athlete and a high upside player with the potential to become a fixture in a midfield, and Tottenham fans are devastated that they want out.
And hearing his specific reasoning will make them more furious. Even though Bergvall should be showing more fight and not assuming Roberto De Zerbi won't use him before he sees him this season, it is hard not to understand where Bergvall is coming from.
Most of the fury will be directed at the club, and especially Thomas Frank, who did not play him as a No. 8 for much of the 2025/26 season. And then later in the season, De Zerbi used veterans like Conor Gallagher and Rodrigo Bentancur over him.
Now, De Zerbi was justified in going witih the veterans to save Tottenham from Premier League relegation, and so Spurs fans may be upset with Bergvall for potentially not recognizing that while requesting his transfer, perhaps extrapolating that decision falsely to what De Zerbi might do with a fresh season and Premier Leagble table set to zero.
Still, it says a lot about the health of the club that another one of the elite prospects at Tottenham does not trust the club to play him and wants out. And based on what he went through last season, Spurs have not earned his trust.
