Lucas Bergvall just struck a nerve with Tottenham fans in addressing transfer request

Even though he has been playing for Sweden at the 2026 World Cup, Lucas Bergvall still submitted a transfer request to Tottenham Hotspur behind the scenes, as he and his reps are increasingly concerned about his role in the squad and opportunity for minutes under new manager Roberto De Zerbi with the Italian head coach pursuing the midfield duo of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes with serious vigor.

It's clear that Bergvall does not want to compete in the Tottenham squad, and he pretty much blindsided the fan base with his latest request. He had a chance to address the transfer request to reporters at the World Cup, but instead of taking on his decision with courage, he decided to ignore a can of worms he already opened.

Bergvall said, via Chris Cowlin, "Right now, I’m just trying to focus on the World Cup. Whatever happens after that, I’ll deal with it then. I’m fully focused on the World Cup. I’m fully focusing on the World Cup. I’m here with Sweden, and we’re going to try to make a good impression in the U.S. Whatever happens after that, we’ll deal with it then. It’s been a tough season, as I said. But now the focus is on the World Cup and being here."

Tottenham fans won't buy what Lucas Bergvall is selling

The problem with what Lucas Bergvall saying is that nobody is buying his excuse that he is focused on the 2026 World Cup and Sweden, because if he really were that focused on it, he would not have bothered to inform Tottenham of his transfer desire until after the tournament ended. He has to know that the information would leak to top reporters like David Ornstein when the information is that solid, and it is very, very telling that Bergvall did not deny the rumors either. Because if he really did not request a transfer, then he would have just laughed it off.

All of that is to say that Tottenham Hotspur supporters clearly have a reason to favor Bergvall less after these comments. Tottenham are coming off a difficult season, and while it is true that Bergvall was not utilized in the right way by Thomas Frank, he did still get to play as a No. 8 more often than he did not. And he sucked. He was one of the team's worst players, especially in the biggest games. And Tottenham were saved from relegation without him in the lineup. So hearing Bergvall waffle on his own intentions will make Spurs fans feel a little less bad about selling him off.
