Although Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall came into the 2025/26 season as the biggest gem on the team, he exited the campaign in which Spurs were very nearly relegated as one of several players who were pretty sizeable disappointments.
Bergvall was not favored by any of the managers who cam through N17. Thomas Frank played him in the wrong role and position, hurting his rhythm and confidence. And then Bergvall had to deal with more injuries again. Igor Tudor did nothing with him either, and then Roberto De Zerbi chose the veteran players like Conor Gallagher, Joao Palhinha, and even Yves Bissouma over him in the starting lineup.
The frustration from Bergvall is palpable, and while the Tottenham faithful still love him and have high hopes that he will be crucial to them in the future, Bergvall sounds like a man who is not willing to commit to the club after a difficult season.
Lucas Bergvall is not happy after last season
He told Fotbollskanalen in Sweden about his tough 2025/26 season with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the start of the 2026 World Cup in North America, “I trust that he will field the best team to win the matches. I’m glad we made it. It’s been a tough season for me and the team, with injuries and so on. It’s nice to turn the page and focus on the World Cup. He’s done well [De Zerbi]. He’s one of the reasons we’re still in the league. It’s clear that he’ll stay. It was only a few games [been the on bench]."
Now that all sounds reasonable from Lucas Bergvall, and it is true that Roberto De Zerbi had his just reasons for snubbing the Swedish international and did end up getting the results he needed without one of the team's best young players.
However, Bergvall's response to the question about his future at N17 was far less positive, “It’s not something I’m focusing on right now. It’s been a tough season, as I said. But now the focus is on the World Cup and being here.”
While Bergvall did not outright say anything bad about Tottenham, his failure to commit speaks volumes. There was no reason for Bergvall to say anything other than he is excited to work wtih De Zerbi, he is fully committed to Spurs, and he loves the team.
Fair enough that Bergvall is more focused on Sweden and the World Cup, but that is such a terse, undiplomatic response to a very benign question. Bergvall sounds legitimately upset at the way the season ended, but he needs to channel that energy positively. Spurs supporters worried about losing a future star after a difficult season won't like those remarks.
