Young Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall has become a big topic of conversation around the club after submitting a transfer request in light of Roberto De Zebri's determined pursuit of high priced Premier League defensive midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Although it appears Bergvall has interest from Nottingham Forest and other notable Premier League clubs, Tottenham are currently rejecting offers and more interested in convincing the promising No. 8 to stay, rather than acquiescing to his demand for a transfer for more immediate playing time.
Until there is full clarity from Bergvall's end, which will likely happen after Sweden's 2026 World Cup elimination after a 3-0 loss to France, the speculation will continue, especially with Mateus Fernandes heading to Tottenham for 85 million pounds - and Tonali likely to join him shortly.
Lucas Bergvall did not shine vs. France
Bergvall has not been starting for the Swedish national team regularly under Graham Potter, probably because, like Roberto De Zerbi, the former Chelsea and Brighton manager does not believe Bergvall has the consistency to be the solution. And he was not exactly great off the bench.
Surprisingly, though, Sweden gave Lucas Bergvall the starting nod in the World Cup Round of 32 tilt against France, arguably the best team in the world. Though instead of taking full advantage of the opportunity to make a major statement against France and prove Potter's faith right, Bergvall, once again, showed he is too raw for these big games.
He was one of the worst players on the pitch, constantly fouling and getting overrun by Adrien Rabiot and the French midfield, particularly in transitions. His attacking output was totally non existent with no chances created, and he struggled to win possession for his team. Bergvall was far from the only player who struggled against Les Bleus, of course, but he may have been the worst offender, hooked off early in the 65th minute by Potter for a reason.
Bergvall boldly submitted the transfer request to Tottenham Hotspur during the World Cup, but all he has done is proven that Roberto De Zerbi and the club should not be starting him regularly and that they do need to sign other midfield players at the base of the team with Bergvall easing into his responsibility by playing in a rotational role. The best players in the world are running circles around Bergvall right now, because he is 20 and still very much learning on the job.
