Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall was beyond disastrous in the Lilywhites 3-0 blowout loss to London rivals Brentford on Matchday 1 of the 2026/27 Premier League season, and he was so bad that he alone probably put Spurs down 2-0 right out of the gate, though, obviously, Spurs were poor as a team.
But Bergvall made the lives of everyone else around him miserable by leaving cavernous gaps defensively, running around as if he had never played this sport before. And every time he had the ball, he lost it, tripping over himself in the worst possible places, somehow equally parts overconfident and not confident at all.
Bergvall then had a huge chance straight from Roberto De Zerbi to rectify his wrongs with a surprise start against Charlton Athletic in the Second Round of the League Cup, and while Tottenham won the game in dominant fashion 5-1, the Lilywhites did not receive a positive performance from Bergvall, who squandered his chance to make a big statement to De Zerbi.

Instead, Bergvall did not even look ready for the EFL Championship, and whlie he is a great athlete, in terms of his actual football quality, he is lacking badly. And so as Spurs think about loaning out Mikey Moore to the Bundesliga in order to get starting opportunities, maybe they need to consider a loan for Bergvall, too, with how far behind he is.
Since Pape Matar Sarr is in talks with Premier League clubs and then Galatasaray and Saudi Pro League sides abroad, Spurs may not have room to loan Lucas Bergvall this summer. But a loan may be the best way to compromise with a player they convinced to keep after he demanded a transfer in order to get more minutes.
Bergvall's transfer demand likely came because he thought he was too good to sit on the bench, but he is proving the opposite, that he is too bad to even play at all. He should be able to grow during the season, but Bergvall is a player with so much more upside and long term ability than what he is showing. And it is going to be difficult for him to reach that level as quickly as he can if he does not play much. If he can't make an impact against Charlton Athletic, then how can he reasonably play in big Premier League matches? He is putting himself in serious contention for a loan.
