It has been another horrendous season on the injury front for Tottenham Hotspur. As the club slogs through a grueling campaign under the management of Thomas Frank and loses left and right, Spurs have been doubly cursed by key injuries at all levels of the field.
Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison remain out with significant knee injuries. Dominic Solanke only just returned from a major foot injury, but now the other striker, Richarlison, is out injured. Mohammed Kudus is done until the March international break. Rodrigo Bentancur could be out for the season with a hamstring tear. Destiny Udogie, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray, and still other key players have also missed time this season with various ailments.
And now, Tottenham have to add another long term injury to the list of Bentancur, Kudus, Kulusevski, and Maddison. Young box to box midfielder Lucas Bergvall had only just returned from a minor injury, and then he went down again in the second half of the 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in obvious pain.
Lucas Bergvall will be out for a bit
Just like the recent injuries to Bentancur and Kudus, Bergvall's injury has turned out to be a serious one. Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen.se reports that Bergvall will have to miss two to three months in total with this latest issue.
Bergvall has quietly become a bit prone to injury, and Tottenham Hotspur have to do a better job of making sure their 19 year old star does not keep suffering aggravations or return too soon from these injuries.
While Spurs have to worry about Bergvall being out and the blow from his absence, they also have to think about making another midfield signing on the transfer market. Tottenham have done pretty much nothing to address their biggest transfer needs this winter. They are no closer to signing a new attacking talent than they were before the window started, and they may actually lose another winger if Mathys Tel pushes for a loan move out, having already sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace.
Meanwhile, in midfield, Spurs signed Conor Gallagher after the Rodrigo Bentancur injury, but Gallagher is actually more of a box to box No. 8 who could replace the now injured Bergvall. But the deep lying progressive playmaker is still a gaping hole for Tottenham - not that Bentancur was doing a good job in this role himself.
With Spurs down another midfielder, now is a prime opportunity for Johan Lange and the club to actually go after that playmaking midfielder in the No. 6 role. The options are thin in the middle of the season, since dream targets like Adam Wharton and Angelo Stiller will not be available just yet.
But Spurs have to at least do their due diligence and try. Last weekend's loss to West Ham United was a cruel reminder that Spurs have to worry about the threat of relegation, and signing a true talent in the No. 6 position would help a lot. There is no excuse not to at least make an honest attempt this winter.
