Tottenham Hotspur 20 year old center midfielder Lucas Bergvall often cut a frustrated figure last season. Thomas Frank did not use him very much despite a great 2024/25 campaign under Ange Postecoglou, and when he did play, the Swedish international was misplaced in positions other than his best one as a No. 8, much to his frustration.

Things did not exactly get much better under Roberto De Zerbi, who saw how poor Bergvall's form was when he did play in the starting lineup and decide instead to focus on the veteran players like Conor Gallagher in the middle of the park, which proved to be the right move as Spurs secured Premier League survival.

And now with De Zerbi already bringing in Matues Fernandes for 85 million pounds from rivals West Ham United and intent on signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for at least as much money, Bergvall submitted a transfer request to Spurs seeing the writing on the wall in terms of his playing time.

Tottenham are not giving up on Lucas Bergvall

Although clubs like Nottingham Forest are lining up with bids, Spurs have been deflecting thus far, and now John Percy of the Daily Telegraph reports that Tottenham Hotspur do not consider their midfield gem to be for sale despite all the transfer interest and his own request to leave.

Huge, huge credit to the new coach Roberto De Zerbi and the man who recruited Lucas Bergvall to Spurs, Johan Lange, for reportedly talking to Bergvall and assuring him that he remains crucial to their plans, because that is probably what Bergvall is looking to hear.

Still, young player are head strong and want to play, and the 20 year old Swede likely has it in his head that Spurs are not the right place for him to develop, putting the onus on Tottenham to make him feel important and prove him wrong.

What Bergvall probably wanted to hear is Spurs green lighting a potential deal to Nottingham Forest or anywhere else where he could be immediately important, play a ton, and use that club as a stepping stone like Elliot Anderson did to play for a title contender.

But the thing is, Spurs and Roberto De Zerbi want to be the next Manchester City or the next team that wins a trophy in the Premier League, and they are not going to do that by selling off their best young players before they can see through their development. Bergvall may not like it now, but if he stays and fights for his spot and believes in the process, then maybe he will see the light one day.
