Lucas Bergvall started the 2026/27 Premier League season in disastrous fashion with a performance against Brentford that was so poor that it stands out as being as terrible as any individual display Spurs fans have seen over the past few seasons - and there have been quite a few horror shows in a Tottenham Hotspur uniform.
But recently, Bergvall has turned around his own displays and shown glimpses of the player that was touted as one of the best young midfielders in the world in his first season for Spurs back in 2024/25. Since then, though, Bergvall has underperformed and been the subject of a lot of drama, and his own questionable performances can't simply be chalked to Thomas Frank, though the former coach's poor management certainly was a drag on many key players.
After Spurs fans figured he would take his ball and go home after the club signed Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali to big money transfers in the summer, Bergvall ended up staying despite significant interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest. And not only was Roberto De Zerbi able to get the Swedish international to stay, but Spurs signed the midfielder to a new contract.
Does Lucas Bergvall have a release clause?
Now, Lucas Bergvall has been asked if that new contract actually contains a release clause, which would give him an "out" to leave Tottenham Hotspur if he changes his mind. And while Bergvall did not confirm the release clause, he didn't deny it either.
Bergvall said to the Swedish media over the September international break, via The Spurs Watch, “Is that what you want to hear? That’s not something I’m going to say. Last year was tough, but I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club and I’m incredibly happy to have signed a new deal. There was a lot of speculation this summer, but I let time do the talking. I didn’t try to force anything.”
It's never a good sign when a player gets a bit on the defensive but also speaks in vague terms, and if there really were no release clause, instead of biting back at the reporters, Bergvall would have denied it and calmly stated that he is fully COYS or otherwise committed to the club.
We did not see that from Bergvall here. Instead, we saw another emotional reaction from the young player, and while he denies that he tried to force anything, it's hard to imagine Spurs would have been actively shopping Bergvall to Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest out of their own volition. A release clause is an easy way for Bergvall to be able to go to, say, Barcelona or Real Madrid, though he'll have to improve his performances by a LOT in order to get any interest from those clubs again.
