Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall is only 20 years old and seen as one of the biggest gems in the box to box midfield position in European football, but he may be on his way out of North London this summer transfer window after submitting a transfer request to the club during the 2026 World Cup.
Bergvall did not get to play a whole lot in 2025/26, and whlie some of that was down to more nagging injuries, a lot of it was down to poor coaching from Thomas Frank, who played Bergvall frequently out of position last season.
It is a fact that current Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi has publicly acknowledged, and whlie he understands the frustration of the Swedish international, he also knows that Bergvall still has to prove that he is the caliber of player worth of starting at Tottenham. And if Bergvall is not willing to take on a backup role at the club behind new blockbuster additions Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, then De Zerbi is not going to beg for him to stay.
Lucas Bergvall is in trouble
As Nottingham Forest and other Premier League sides circle around Lucas Bergvall, who underperformed for Sweden at the World Cup this summer, Luca Williams-Barnett is rising to threaten his place as a 17 year old homegrown gem with a mentality that exceeds Bergvall's and even more moxie and quality on the ball.
Williams-Barnett has been one of the standout players throught the first three friendly matches of the preseason thus far, and both veteran players like Ben Davies and fellow youngsters like Mathys Tel cannot stop raving about his quality and his mentality - and even De Zerbi has taken clear notice of the teenage sensation's upside.
Tottenham have some big decisions to make this summer transfer window before the market closes in August, and with Williams-Barnett legitimately breaking out in the middle of the park, their decision on Bergvall has been getting a bit easier now.
Because while Roberto De Zerbi is trying to get Bergvall to stay and is even denying the veracity of that initial transfer request, Tottenham fans have received no word of commitment from Bergvall in in the interim. And LWB is beginning to cast a shadow on the center midfielder who is three years his senior. Tottenham will have room for another body to gives minutes to in the box to box role, and if Spurs get 60 million pounds for Bergie, it will be hard to say no.
