Despite spending £329 on new players in the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have had a very poor start to the new season. They are yet to score a Premier League goal this season, and their only win came in the previous round of the EFL Cup against Charlton Athletic of the Championship.
Roberto De Zerbi's side suffered back-to-back defeats against Brentford and Newcastle United to start the Premier League campaign. These results sandwiched the 5-1 win over Charlton. However, what followed were two 0-0 draws against Nottingham Forest and then Everton.
Liverpool will be the first really top side that De Zerbi has faced this season. This is with all due respect to Newcastle, who sold a lot of their best players over the summer, including Sandro Tonali to Spurs.
After keeping Spurs in the Premier League last season, it was expected that De Zerbi would get the club back to where their supporters believe they should belong. This should be at least challenging for European football. However, it looks like Spurs could be in for another relegation battle this campaign.
Liverpool will be Tottenham's biggest test so far this season
The match with Liverpool could show just how far off the top teams Spurs are. This is also a Reds side that is in transition, with Andoni Iraola in his first season at the club after taking over from Arne Slot. Iraola's side could only draw with Fulham last weekend in the Premier League. This is a poor result as the Cottagers were on the back of three straight defeats in the division.
Following the match with Liverpool, Spurs play Aston Villa in the Premier League. Villa are also yet to win a league game this season, and have so far scored just one goal in the division. However, Spurs then have fixtures against Manchester United and Chelsea, sandwiching a game versus Coventry City. Coventry have found life difficult back in the Premier League so far, are also yet to score a goal, and have lost all of their games so far.
De Zerbi needs his side to score and get points on the board. If he can get a result against Liverpool in the cup tomorrow night, it would be a huge confidence boost. If not, then talk about De Zerbi's future at Tottenham will only increase. He does not last long in jobs, and tends to manage upwards poorly. How long he will be Spurs' manager remains to be seen.
