Liverpool's signing is an indirectly huge blow for Tottenham's own striker wish

Tottenham Hotspur aren't desperate for a striker this summer, as the club appears to be high on 65 million pound signing Dominic Solanke, whom the club brought in from Bournemouth last summer. Although Solanke wasn't much of a goal threat, he worked so hard for the team and was a decisive factor down the stretch of the Europa League-winning campaign.

Behind him, backup striker Richarlison seems less likely to leave than he was at the beginning of the transfer window, as new manager Thomas Frank has been publicly backing the Brazilian's quality and seems to want to give the ex-Everton star a final chance to shine in Tottenham colors this season.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed for either player, and the reality is that neither man has proven they can be a 20-goal striker. Frank had two players reach 19 goals at Brentford last season, which is a huge feat, and although he's pretty much lost out on Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United without much of a fight from Daniel Levy and the board, Yoane Wissa, who scored 19 goals in 2024/25, is still on the table.

Tottenham are probably stuck with Richarlison

The problem is that while Tottenham should be the overwhelming favorites to sign Wissa, they haven't made much of an approach with him, probably because they are having such a difficult time moving Richarlison. And that may be the real reason why Frank is praising Richarlison; he knows, somewhere, he's probably stuck with him.

Liverpool's signing of Hugo Ekitike, per Fabrizio Romano, is another massive injection of talent to the clear best team in the Premier League right now, and while Tottenham were never really serious contenders for the Frenchman despite loose links earlier in 2025, the Ekitike move is still a blow to Spurs.

That's because Liverpool's main competition for Ekitike was Newcastle, and the Magpies have Wissa tabbed as their top alternative. With Ekitike gone to Anfield, their focus is now primarily going to be on Wissa as a partner for superstar Alexander Isak, and if they want Wissa as their second striker, they have more ammunition to go after him.

Wissa prefers Tottenham and working with Frank, but if Spurs don't push harder to sign the experienced Brentford star, then the Ekitike move to Liverpool could be the domino that leads to Newcastle going all-in for the 19-goal striker and snagging him over Spurs before the summer transfer window ends.
