Tottenham Hotspur have a number of players who deserve more credit from the mainstream media, and it feels like even superstar center backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven don't get enough love for being world-class defenders.
There are some Spurs players who don't even get enough credit from their own fanbase, such as Guglielmo Vicario. The star goalkeeper was getting slammed by his own fans for much of the 2025/26 season before turning up some ridiculous individual performances to save the club points, including an unforgettable Champions League night in a 0-0 draw with Monaco.
Tottenham fans have caught on to Vicario being one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, yet the mainstream continues to snub him. Sports Illustrated recently ranked the top 10 goalkeepers in the English top flight, and they somehow ranked Vicario outside the top five all the way down in seventh place.
Even Nottingham Forest man was rated higher
Vicario was ranked so low he was behind Matz Sels of Nottingham Forest and a literal backup goalkeeper in Liverpool's Giorgi Mamardhasvili. Although these are two good goalkeepers, there is no way their overall body of work and performances this season merit being ranked above Vicario.
Look at the numbers. Vicario is literally third in the Premier League in save percentage at 77.3 behind only Gianluigi Donnarumma and Robin Roefs. He's beating out several goalkeepers ranked ahead of him, including top-class Arsenal shot stopper David Raya. And he's well above Sels and Mamardashvili, too, as well as Emiliano Martinez, who is way overrated and clearly behind Vicario in terms of quality despite Sports Illustrated ranking him in the top five.
In addition to being in the top three in save percentage, Vicario is second in post shot expected goals prevented above average, behind only Dean Henderson. So Vicario quite literally has a statistical argument for being the best goalkeeper in the Premier League of the 2025/26 season, making his ranking in seventh place absolutely laughable.
Spurs owe a lot of their points in the Champions League and Premier League table to Vicario. He has easily lapped up Mamardashvili, who has been a huge downgrade on Alisson Becker and deeply, deeply disappointing this season, nowhere near Vicario in any of these statistical charts. Vicario has prevented nearly four goals above an average keeper, while Mamardhasvili has been one of the worst performers in this statistic with nearly three goals allowed worse than average.
