Legendary Tottenham Hotspur center back Ledley King is one of the best defenders to have ever graced the Premier League and a respected competitor whose word still carries an immense amount of weight around the club and around the fan base.
The problem, though, is that King is an ambassador and a mouthpiece at the club, so his word about the players may carry weight, but his word about the club's ownership continues to be the sort of pandering the Tottenham faithful could do without.
Although King gave a lot of great insight in his recent interview with Football.London's Alasdair Gold, the former Tottenham central defender had a lot of high praise for the Lewis Family despite years of complacency and neglect, promising big things ahead for Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham fans are not believers
Ledley King said, "I've felt their intent in making the football club great. Just in passing, it's really great to have brief conversations. I can feel that they really want to do big things with the football club, they've said they do and I really do believe they mean it.”
Tottenham fans will still have to believe it when they see it, but, in fairness to what King is saying, the Lewis Family did make a couple of huge moves for the Lilywhites this summer transfer window. Jan Paul van Hecke, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes were 250 million pound investments nearly, and Spurs are going to have to spend almost as much on a new forward line.
But with how slowly things have moved in talks for Savinho and how few candidates are emerging in the attack overall, especially at striker, Tottenham fans are rightfully going to be skeptical of what King is selling to them.
Though they may love King as a player and what he did for Spurs on the pitch, off the pitch, his work as a mouth piece is not as appreciated by the fans. They want to see results, and they want to see them year after year, represented in real trophies and success on a consistent basis, rather than one or two big signings here or there. The Lewis Family is not going to get any praise or benefit of the doubt from the Tottenham faithful, and while the Tonali and Fernandes moves, in particular, are huge steps in the right direction, they definitely do not erase years of disappointment and outright neglect.
