Tottenham Hotspur have made quite a few blockbuster signings this summer transfer window and will have a few more coming, which Roberto De Zerbi all but confirmed recently to the press, in order to add to the attack after building up the defense and midfield. But to start the window, they landed two veteran free agent Premier League defenders in Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi.
Out of the five established Premier League outfield players Tottenham have signed this summer transfer window, Robertson is the only one who was not a crucial starter for his team last season. Now, Robbo is a legend of the league and used to be a fixture at left back, but he has declined in recent seasons, with young Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth replacing him.
But Tottenham did not show interest in Robertson back in January and then signed him in the summer for his ability to be a starter, as Spurs have Destiny Udogie and even Djed Spence at left back. No, they signed Robertson for his character and leadership, and while those buzzwords lead most Spurs fans to grown, lately, they have been a bit talked into Robbo.
Andy Robertson has respect for the game
He made a great gesture, too, to start his life as a Spur, turning down the No. 26 jersey he made iconic at Liverpool in order to wear No. 3. Even though Robertson is also a Premier League great at this point, he will not step on the toes of a titan of the game in Ledley King, who was beloved at Tottenham Hotspur and England and wore the No. 26 for Spurs.
King heard about this and gave Andy Robertson the highest praise for his character and for doing this, via Chris Cowlin, "For him to decide not to wear the shirt was a testament to his character really, a great sign of respect. Of course, I know he's a legend at Liverpool in that same shirt. It was a really nice touch. We spoke at the airport before we came out and shared a few words about it. It was nice."
That right there is the No. 1 reason why Tottenham signed Robertson. As Ledley King says, it was about his "character". Roberto De Zerbi approved the signing and agreed with Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham, because he knows that Spurs need more leaders in the locker room and people like this who are unselfish and put the team first and the history first. Robertson has no history with Spurs, yet he respects the club like he played here for 10 years, and Spurs do need that in the building. It will go a long way, especially with Spurs realizing that they have a lot of players like Lucas Bergvall and Cristian Romero who care about their own numbers more than anything else.
