Tottenham Hotspur have already bagged two of the best free agents in the Premier League to bolster their defense in Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi, but they aren't done there, nor are they only after free agent plays. Spurs are seriously interested in Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke, and with Roberto De Zerbi in charge of the club, they are even closer to spending big on the Brighton central defender this summer.
If Van Hecke joins with Senesi, Tottenham would be filled to the brim with center backs. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are the starting duo from last season with Kevin Danso forming an excellent trio behind them. Then there is Radu Dragusin the fourth center back, as well as the sensational Luka Vuskovic and the underrated Kota Takai on loan to the Bundesliga.
Vuskovic, Romero, and Van de Ven are all more than capable starters, as are the incoming Senesi and the potentially incoming Van Hecke. Danso would not be out of place in an XI either, so that would give Spurs six quality central defenders.
Tottenham knew all along
Something has to give, and with Tottenham pushing hard after Van Hecke now even after signing Senesi, captain Cristian Romero seems even more likely to leave. The Argentina international already looked like a man on the way out of Spurs, but the interest in central defenders makes it obvious that Romero is going because fans are already wondering who else could join him.
In a recent update, @szyexcl told a Tottenham fan amidst the Jan Paul van Hecke to Spurs transfer rumors that Cristian Romero is indeed slated to leave N17. The Spurs insider stated that Romero is "leaving the club", and he added another interesting wrinkle to the news by stating that Romero's departure has been planned all the way back in January.
That is a layer worth pondering, because Tottenham Hotspur supporters were noticing worse play from Romero and even less effort and an attitude shift in the player as the season went on. When Spurs needed him most, Romero did not act like a leader nor play like one, dropping his level during the Premier League relegation fight.
Spurs fans mostly defended Romero through the accusations, but there was a feeling even at the time that some players did not care if Spurs got relegated because they were leaving anyway. Now, it looks like Romero was one of those guys, and it's a shame this will likely be the last season on his ledger and his final memory to the fans.
