Tottenham Hotspur spent more than 50 million pounds to sign Jan Paul van Hecke this past summer transfer window from Brighton, with manager Roberto De Zerbi insisting heavily on reuniting with his prodigal son from the Seagulls, even if it costed the team Luka Vuskovic.
While Van Hecke has been, as De Zerbi expected, one of the elite passers of the football at any position in the entire Premier League, there has been a tinge of regret from the Lilywhite faithful regarding the departure of the young gem, who was one of the top five Bundesliga Player of the Season candidates at Hamburg last season and has started the 2026/27 Premier League season very well for Brighton.
Spurs do not view Van Hecke as a transfer flop, but while he has been incredible in terms of his passing and helping Roberto De Zerbi exert the level of tactical control over the pitch that he was hoping to, the Dutch center back has not proven himself defensively.
Tottenham need to see more from Jan Paul van Hecke
He had a disastrous outing against Brentford on Matchday 1, and whlie he recovered to improve thereafter, he has still been the weaker half of the pair with captain Micky van de Ven. And even though he played well overall against Aston Villa, there were still too many shaky moments in the first half and early second half, in which Aston Villa raced out to a 3-0 lead before eventually winning the game 3-2.
Tottenham need to see more out of Jan Paul van Hecke in terms of his defensive consistency on a weekly basis. He just isn't reading the game at a high enough level, and because he isn't a quicker player in one on ones, his positioning has to be nearly perfect. And it just isn't, which is something teams like Brentford and even Newcastle United and Aston Villa have exploited.
Again, Van Hecke hasn't been bad. He has been an asset to Tottenham Hotspur overall, and if there is regret over the Luka Vuskovic sale to Brighton, then it isn't necessarily on Van Hecke, because Roberto De Zerbi could have just as well kept both players. Spurs were not held at gun point to sell Vuskovic to the Seagulls.
However, Van Hecke, as a 50 million pound transfer, could be doing better as a starting center back for Spurs. The Micky van de Ven and Van Hecke pairing isn't as good as the Cristian Romero and Van de Ven one yet despite Van de Ven playing better himself, and that's because Van Hecke hasn't fully proven himself as a defender. And as great as it is to see him passing the ball around like Sergio Ramos's cousin, defending is still the most important thing for a center back to do, even in the modern game.
