Tottenham Hotspur spent 52 million pounds to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton this summer transfer window, and even though the move was going to cost them young gem Luka Vuskovic, manager Roberto De Zerbi still forged 100 percent ahead and demanded that Johan Lange and the front office secure the deal for his former star pupil in defense.
Van Hecke joins Micky van de Ven as the new starting duo for Tottenham, with Marcos Senesi and Kevin Danso as a strong three and four behind them. There will be a lot of pressure on Van Hecke to perform, since Spurs spent 52 million pounds on a player who had just one year left on his contract.
Now, the new Tottenham center back is under even more pressure. After weeks of negotiations, Fabrizio Romano has given the "here we go" to Chelsea for the acquisition of center back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. Lacroix is the same age as Van Hecke, 26, but he has a few years left on his contract and is coming off a much better 2025/26 Premier League season than the Dutch international. The final transfer fee Chelsea will pay to Palace will be 52 million pounds, exactly what Spusr spent on Van Hecke.
Jan Paul van Hecke has pressure to manage
So now, Jan Paul van Hecke has to prove that he is a better player than Lacroix over at rivals Chelsea, because he went for the same exact fee to Tottenham despite, in theory, not being as valuable on the market with Brighton under pressure to sell due to the fact that he could have just as easily joined Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs a summer later for free.
Of course, if Tottenham Hotspur make it back to the Champions League places as a result of Van Hecke performing at a high level, then the extra money spent will not matter. But the price tag on Van Hecke's head has more pressure with it that De Zerbi will have to ease, especially if Van Hecke has a period where he struggles and fans go back and point to how much was paid by De Zerbi and Johan Lange for him.
Van Hecke had an amazing World Cup and was one of the best center backs in the tournament, so he could very well be better than Maxence Lacroix. But the latter won a trophy last season even without Marc Guehi by his side and really broke out as a top player. Van Hecke has some pressure to deal with.
