When Tottenham Hotspur signed Jan Paul van Hecke for 60 million euros from Brighton this past summer transfer window, there was a lot of skepticism from outside N17 regarding the deal. While Spurs fans very much had a "In Roberto De Zerbi We Trust" outlook towards the signing, which was quite expensive for a player with one year left on his deal and not a lot of resale value, many around the Premier League were criticizing the deal, especially since Spurs were losing Luka Vuskovic afterwards to Brighton for abou the same money after the young phenom was one of the best players in the entire Bundesliga in just his first season as a senior player.
Vuskovic has been scoring and doing well for the Seagulls, but Van Hecke has been so brilliant to start the 2026/27 Premier League season that Tottenham fans are not only reminding other fan bases that Vuskovic never played a minute for Tottenham in the Premier League and still went for a massive fee, but that Van Hecke was actually the replacement for the "world class" Cristian Romero.
Tottenham fans began to doubt Romero's world class status themselves after watching the Argentinian international struggle to pull Spurs above the relegation zone last season, and they actually achieved safety with the captain out injured.

And though Romero was praised quite heavily for his quality on the ball, he didn't actually make much of a dent as a passer for Spurs last season. Meanwhile, Jan Paul van Hecke has been spellbinding to start the 2026/27 season for Tottenham, and even though Spurs still can't get a win, the Dutch international has improved immensely after a rough wake up call of an outing on Matchday 1 against local rivals Brentford.
Over his past two starts, Van Hecke has been Spurs best player, and he is currently sitting on 81 passes per game and a pass completion percentage of over 95 percent, making him one of the Premier League's most lethal passers at any position - not just center back.
Van Hecke has made the memory of Cristian Romero obsolete, and while many thought that Romero's quality on the ball would win Roberto De Zerbi over, the Italian manager was willing to sell Romero to Atletico Madrid without any regrets. Meanwhile, he has turned Van Hecke into a much better version of what Romero was on the ball, fulfilling a prophecy that he foretold by spending big on the Dutch defender from Brighton.
