Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher is not always a popular figure among Premier League fan bases, including those from the same club he won the Champions League for, but a lot of times, he says the harsh truths that need to be heard and has elite ball knowledge. Tottenham Hotspur fans saw Carragher be spot on and realistic about their team last season, and he was one of the few to actually be honest about Spurs without sensationalizing or outright rooting against them.
Now, Carragher is talking about Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, who finds himself under fire after a winless start to the 2026/27 Premier League season. Despite spending nearly 400 million pounds on exactly all the players he wanted - well, besides Liverpool's Cody Gakpo - the Lilywhites are literally worse off in the table, sitting at the very bottom with just two points.
De Zerbi has already engaged in a bloody feud with Richarlison, whom he left off the squad entirely despite the Brazilian being the team's leading goal scorer last season - and obviously Tottenham are hurting for goals.
Roberto De Zerbi's volatility could boil over
Jamie Carragher used both this example and the way Roberto De Zerbi has been calling out some players publicly to remind Tottenham Hotspur fans that RDZ's volatility may not go over well in the locker room if the losing continues.
The former Liverpool center back said, via The Spurs Watch, "The one worry for Tottenham is that De Zerbi is not shy in coming out and speaking publicly about his frustrations, and he's already picked a couple of players out on the pitch and off-camera. Now, I sometimes feel at times players are a little bit sensitive to that type of criticism, and supporters jump on it a little bit too much, but that's only going to grow if those results continue, and if those results continue, eventually he will combust; that's just his history. To turn a football club around of that size, it was going to take more than just bringing in players and buying players. They don't want to hear it, but they've just got to be patient and wait."
Carragher is spot on about how Tottenham have to be patient and can't think that suddenly making big signings is going to right the ship, which is exactly what we are seeing. And that's a positive in favor of De Zerbi getting patience.
The negative is Carragher's warning. And notice he is not saying De Zerbi is wrong for calling players out, and many rational people will agree that players are too soft these days with criticism from managers and pundits. But he's right about how the reality of the situation is. Players get upset, and if the losses compile, the fans will join on the criticized players in turning on De Zerbi. It's a combustible situation that fans were worried about potentially happening in the future the minute De Zerbi took the job.
