Although most Tottenham Hotspur fans don't regret missing out on Eberechi Eze, even though he won the Premier League title with rivals Arsenal last season, because they were able to land Xavi Simons instead, Nottingham Forest star attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White will always be the one that got away.
Had Daniel Levy fought as hard for the MGW signing as Roberto De Zerbi surely would have in 2026, perhaps Tottenham would have been able to land the star man after signing him to a release clause, fair and square, before the Premier League allowed Evangelos Marinakis to throw a tantrm and block the blockbuster deal. Then, Gibbs-White signed a new contract with Forest and the rest is history.
Gibbs-White had a phenomenal season in 2025/26 while Tottenham finished behind Nottingham Forest and nearly got relegated. The England international scored an insane 15 goals and 4 assists - goals Spurs would have badly needed.
Morgan Gibbs-White is only getting better and better
So far this season, Gibbs-White is quietly off to another torrid start with 3 goal contributions in 5 games, while Tottenham don't even have 3 goals in 5 Premier League games of their own. The Forest No. 10 is actually putting up even more insane numbers elsewhere on the board with 2.8 key passes, 2.6 combined dribbles completed and fouls drawn, and even a full tackle per game
According to Gradient Sports, Morgan Gibbs-White has been so good in the 2026/27 Premier League season thus far that he ranks second overall among attacking midfielders in rating, and he is first in all of the following categories: passing, crossing, ball distribution, passing under pressure, and even tackling.
Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, are getting nothing out of their team creatively. James Maddison has been injured again, while Mohammed Kudus and Mateus Fernandes have been ineffective in the attacking midfield role.
Spurs are going to need a fully healthy Maddison after this September international break, and their own star attacking midfielder has high expectations to live up to, because a player like Gibbs-White is what Spurs fans have always wanted - and this is the sort of production they want to see from their attacking midfielder.
Now, James Maddison does not have to be the best or second best attacking midfielder in the Premier League right now like Gibbs-White is, but what MGW is doing for Nottingham Forest is a measuring stick for what Tottenham want to challenge Maddison to bring to the table. Because they need better production from their No. 10 in order to win games.
