Pedro Porro is one of the select Tottenham Hotspur stars set to play an important role at the 2026 World Cup as the right back for the Spanish national team, and there is certainly no rest for the wicked when it comes to the Spurs star, who played pretty much every game for the team until he was run into the ground.
That wear and tear mentally was beginning to become obvious when Spurs were at their worst, and under Thomas Frank, Porro was showing a real ugly side to himself with frustrations boiling over and bad habits beginning to seep in as the club lost games left and right.
But quickly under Roberto De Zerbi, Porro, like so many other important players at Tottenham, got back to his best. By the end of the season, Porro resumed being one of the elite right backs in the Premier League, delivering monsterclasses, including against Everton on Matchday 38 to seal Spurs survival.
Tottenham are making the only Pedro Porro move that matters
Now, according to a report from Jorge Garcia of Diario AS and other reporters around Spain and England, Tottenham Hotspur are close to finalizing a contract extension with Pedro Porro at the behest of Roberto De Zerbi, who has been pushing hard for the club to make sure the Spanish international is in it for the long haul.
A final renewal is said to be close to being official, with Garcia remarking that Tottenham have been swift to negotiation in this case. Though it does make Tottenham fans wonder why the club were not so swift ot renew Porro prior to De Zerbi's appointment as manager, given how important he has been to the club with no real backup for him, beyond potentially Djed Spence (who mostly backs up at the left back position nowadays).
Porro has his flaws and can frustrate for consistency at times, but there is a reason why clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City have been dreaming about him and even pushing this summer to steal him away (Madrid ended up going for Denzel Dumfries instead).
He is a high quality right back in a world football landscape that has very few true two way players like him in the prime of their careers. Porro is 26, and his best football will be ahead of him under De Zerbi. With a contract that runs out in just two years, extending Porro now is clearly an obvious conclusion for Spurs to come to.
