Tottenham Hotspur have been open to selling Cristian Romero for quite some time now, and his decision to attempt to leave the club for Argentina as their captain during the peak of the relegation fight on the final Matchday of the 2025/26 season was the last straw for many, including manager Roberto De Zerbi, who did not hide his public disappointment.
Although some former Spurs figures have wanted the club to keep Romero on the grounds of his quality as a defender, De Zerbi has not even attempted to talk Romero into staying, whereas Spurs were trying to do so with Luka Vuskovic before his Brighton departure and have still been trying to talk Lucas Bergvall down from leaving, too.
But the Romero ship has sailed, and while many thought it was a slam dunk for him to go to La Liga after more than a year of links to Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, Inter Milan have become the favorites for the Argentinian star all of a sudden.
Cristian Romero is going back to Serie A
Already, Inter are confirming their interest in Cuti. The Nerazzurri's sporting director Piero Ausilio recently said, via Fabrizio Romano, “We are interested for sure, it’s true. We spoke to the agent and Tottenham. We will see what happens”.
Tottenham Hotspur can fully expect Cristian Romero's next landing spot to be Inter Milan. The deal has progressed to such a point that Inter are not even hiding their interest, and Ausilio did not even bother caging his statement; the Inter director straight up stated that they are "for sure" interested and have talked to both the player and the club.
Teams generally do not do that unless they are getting confident that they can strike a deal. The problem for Spurs is that Inter do not usually spend a whole lot of money on transfers and like to find great deals in the mid tier, and with figures floated around of 40 million euros for the 28 year old center back, that's probably what Inter see Romero as, too.
Tottenham hade made it too obvious that Romero was going to go, and the player had already wanted out last year anyway. With Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi taking his place in the squad, the myth of Romero's future was just that - and it looks like a rival club to his old Serie A side Juventus will be in his future.
