Tottenham Hotspur have added three new players to their defense, and now Roberto De Zerbi and the club are turning their attention to build the midfield as the next step in their overhaul of the club. Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes are the two main names De Zerbi is focused on, and he would like to sign both star players in conjunction with each other to rebuild Spurs midfield back into one actually capable of the top five of the Premier League.
But in case one of those deals falls through or Spurs need to sign more depth with Lucas Bergvall now wanting out of the club, Tottenham do need to have a list of alternatives readily available. One of those players is Liverpool center midfielder Curtis Jones, whom Spurs started showing interest in last summer and through the winter transfer window but never made a formal approach for (signing Conor Gallagher instead).
Jones has become a topic of conversation again this summer, but Tottenham have not shown concrete interest as of yet. The main team involved in signing Jones is Inter Milan, as the Italian giants have been working hard to take the England international from Liverpool, hoping to get the rotational piece at a bargain price.
A cheap alternative is still available for Spurs
But according to a report from Fabrizio Romano, the latest verbal proposal for Curtis Jones from Inter Milan to Liverpool of 25 million euros was "instantly rejected". Fabrizio did not specifically state which price Liverpool are looking for, just that they want more in return for Jones. The transfer reporter added that the deal is not "progressing at current conditions".
That is great news for Tottenham Hotspur if they ever want to go back in for Jones, who could be a nice rotational player for them and would be a superior box to box midfielder than Conor Gallagher. It is hard to envision Roberto De Zerbi moving on from Gallagher since he has a weird love for the England international, but most fans would prefer Jones.
A fee of, say, 30 million euros or even 35 million euros is not terrible for Jones, who is still not yet in the prime of his career at the age of 25. Still, Tottenham have much bigger targets to focus on right now between both Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes as an ambitious double swoop for De Zerbi, and there may still be bigger gems that become available later in the window, like Nico Paz.
