It is only natural that fans and the media are going to pit the two best true No. 9's on the planet against each other, and when these two players just happen to be going face to face in a World Cup quarterfinal, the comparisons are only going to reach a crescendo.

England's Harry Kane and Norway's Erling Haaland will square off in the quarterfinal between one of the favorites and the biggest darling team of the tournament, both sides surviving stiff Round of 16 challenges with the Three Lions escaping a very game Mexico at the Azteca and Norway upending Vinicius Junior and the rest of his finished Brazil teammates.

Tottenham Hotspur fans, for years, have been banging the table about how Kane is one of the best strikers of all time and the best striker on the planet, with that sentiment becoming quite clear after Karim Benzema's abrupt decline due to injuries in 2022/23. That was the same season, though, that Haaland burst onto the scene in his first season with Manchester City, winning the treble and breaking the Premier League scoring record in the process. So the comparison is indeed close.

Harry Kane is still the man

But perhaps the best analysis of the Harry Kane vs. Erling Haaland debate came from the England national team striker himself. The Bayern Munich star and Ballon d'Or favorite for 2026 told reporters ahead of the England vs. Norway game, via iMiaSanMia:

"That's an impossible one for me to answer. First of all, I think we are completely different players almost. I know we are both seen as strikers, but it is almost two different positions, if I'm totally honest. Erling has been incredible, his goal-scoring record. Physically, he's a machine, he's a beast. His finishing is at the highest level, and obviously, his goal-scoring record speaks for itself. I see myself as a different player, although I score the same goals. I like to maybe touch the ball a little bit more, be involved in play a little bit more, but also can play as an out-and-out nine. I don't think it is one to compare ourselves. I respect him a lot as a player and a fellow professional. Obviously, hoping he has a quiet day tomorrow. His overall performances over these recent years speak for themselves. He's a fantastic player."

Haaland does work very hard for the team and honestly deserves more credit for his work as a passer, but there is no question that Kane's all around game is on a different level. He might be the best all around striker of the last 30 years after Karim Benzema, and that is probably an even closer debate than Haaland vs. Kane.

Maybe Haaland is a little bit better at scoring goals, but when you look at the numbers now that Kane is on Bayern and not Tottenham Hotspur, you could argue it the other way around just as easily, which Kane points out. But Kane can pass like a 6/8/10 midfielder, dribble like a 10, and defend in his own box. He is still clear of the young Norwegian.
