Argentina managed to skate past another upset bid under controversial circumstances, which means they will renew their historic World Cup rivalry with England in the semifinals after the Three Lions got some more Jude Bellingham heroics to beat out an excellent Norway side in a hard fought 2-1 victory that also went into extra time.

The battle between Argentina and England will feature several storylines, including a particularly interesting one for Spurs. Because legendary Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be going up against Argentina center back Cristian Romero, the current Spurs captain who is very, very likely to lose is captaincy this summer and be sold after trying to betray the team during their Premier League relegation battle.

Although Romero is a good player, he is someone who buys into his own hype a little too much and is not a true leader. Even before the 2025/26 season started and he embarrassed himself with a lack of effort when his team needed him the most, Romero had already rubbed Spurs fans the wrong way by openly pining for a La Liga transfer, which will surely be coming his way this summer.

Cristian Romero could be in trouble

Spurs fans have been rooting for Cristian Romero to do well in order for him to up his transfer value in preparation for an obvious move to, likely, either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid, but most will be rooting against him when his Argentina takes on England, especially with all the controversy surrounding his national team's dubious victories.

Romero has impressed by scoring goals, winning the ball, and making great passes, but he has also had it easy with the strikers he is going up against. In the semifinals, Romero will have to deal with his former teammate and the best striker on the planet in Kane, and he could really get exposed badly for the world to see.

Because the problem with Romero is that he lacks discipline, he makes bad decisions, his defensive fundamentals are poor, and he can lay a dud at the worst possible time. Usually, he is strong in the big games, but he also does not get tested much when he plays for Argentina or when he was in the Europa League and won that trophy.

Kane is a big, big test - bigger than what Romero is used to - and this caliber of striker is the kind of intelligent, technical player who can give Romero fits. His transfer value could come crashing back down to earth with this battle.
