Although legendary striker Harry Kane never came close to winning the Ballon d'Or for Tottenham Hotspur, every single Spurs supporter knew that the England international had the quality to win the award one day, contingent on him being on the right team. Unfortunately, that never came together for Kane and Spurs under Daniel Levy rule, but fans have been elated to see Kane at least getting the recognition he deserves for being one of the best all around strikers in the history of the game while at an ambitious European juggernaut in Bayern Munich.
While Bayern did not win the Champions League and England did not win the World Cup, Kane was in the semifinals of both competitions and led Bayern to another easy Bundesliga title victory. As an individual, he was on another plane of existence, scoring 73 goals in all competitions despite working so hard on the defensive end, even winning world class tackles in his own box, and producing elite chances, including from deep in midfield.
Harry Kane was the unanimous choice during the actual season
Throughout the 2025/26 season, Harry Kane was pretty much the unanimous pick from people who actually watch football every week to win the Ballon d'Or, but, unfortunately, when it is a World Cup year, narratives change to suit big names with cult followings. Lamine Yamal did not even have his best season yet is in the Ballon d'Or discussion after winning the World Cup (despite having a disappointing tournament), Kylian Mbappe is getting a lot of love despite a horrible season for Real Madrid in which he dragged the team down, and even Lionel Messi is in the conversation despite not even playing in a European league.
Instead of having to wax poetic about his merits or give giant, self-aggrandizing interviews like the immature Mbappe and Yamal, the Bayern Munich star knows all he has to do is simply point to the facts.
Kane told MARCA, via Fabrizio Romano, “I don’t like to speak about myself… 73 goals speak for themselves. It’s been the best season of my life, by far."
It is unfathomable to think that Kane could be snubbed of the Ballon d'Or for a player like Kylian Mbappe, who literally won nothing for club or country despite being on stacked teams, when he scored 73 goals in a season while providing much, much better all around play than any of the other forwards in contention. Kane knows the facts speak for themselves, but his case is entirely up to people actually being smart enough to interpret them, instead of giving it in a popularity contest.
