Once regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in European football, Guglielmo Vicario's reputation took a bigger hit than anyone's on Tottenham Hotspur this season after a series of individual errors and mental lapses helped lead Spurs down the road of the Premier League relegation battle. And with Antonin Kinsky outperforming Vicario in his stead as he recovered from a hernia surgery he really should have underwent earlier in the season, Spurs are more out on Vicario than ever before.

Vicario already had significant interest from Inter Milan months ago, with the Nerazzurri hoping to sign the former Serie A star at Empoli as a replacement for Yann Sommer. A deal appeared to be close, too, with every Spurs fan seeing his exit as a foregone conclusion, especially with Kinsky making relegation saving saves without any of the mistakes Vicario was making all the whlie playing amazingly well on the ball for Roberto De Zerbi.

However, selling Guglielmo Vicario may be more difficult than Tottenham Hotspur supporters anticipated, as the Inter Milan track may not be such a foregone conclusion after all. Simon Jones of the Daily Mail reports that while Vicario is still expected to leave at this moment in time, Inter have quietly been looking for other goalkeeping options besides the Italian international.

Inter Milan have cold feet

Vicario has made brilliant saves and was a savior for Empoli, but at Tottenham, his ceiling has been exposed, and he may be a better fit for a club that has less pressure, which will not be the case for Serie A champions Inter Milan either.

Now, Vicario did endear himself more to Spurs supporters as the season went on. He showed up well as a character in supporting Antonin Kinsky, Roberto De Zerbi, and the players in their march towards Premier League safety, and even his poor performances could be explained by the hernia - and he, in his own mind, was helping the team with all he could by playing through the injury.

De Zerbi seems to be a big fan of Vicario, too, though Kinsky remained in goal - and justly so - for his great performances down the stretch. Keeping Vicario and having him compete with Kinsky would not be the worst scenario in the case of Inter backing out, but, still, surely Spurs would rather sell Vicario to a big club like Inter for good money, recoup what they paid to Empoli, and then reinvest slightly more money in a top young goalkeeper to join Kinsky like James Trafford.
