Tottenham Hotspur signed standout young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to a contract extension with a raise that affirmed his status as the new No. 1 at the club. There was previously a belief that in selling Guglielmo Vicario, who will likely head back to Serie A with Juventus still interested as their talks with Emiliano Martinez stall, Tottenham were going to sign a new No. 1. And many Spurs supporters were very interested in rescuing James Trafford from the Manchester City bench.
However, Kinsky impressed Spurs supporters and now Roberto De Zerbi to such a degree that De Zerbi and the club have committed to Kinsky as the No. 1. And to confirm that, beyond the new contract, they signed noted Premier League No. 2 and Czechia international Martin Dubravka to back Kinsky up, rather than going for a new top dog.
Vicario's future remains far from settled after Inter Milan backed out of the race to sign him, perhaps noticing how much worse he was than Kinsky when Tottenham Hotspur greatly turned their fortunes around by switching goalkeepers in the relegation fight.
Guglielmo Vicario is not a leader
During the season, Vicario became an issue not just for his poor play but also for his attitude problems, yelling at defenders for his own mistakes. So when he posted a crytpic message that said, "Leader, Not follower" on social media with a black background, as captured by Chris Cowlin, Spurs fans were not too pleased about it.
It is unclear if Guglielmo Vicario is talking about himself or about Antonin Kinsky. Who is the leader and who is the follower? Is Vicario saying Kinsky is a leader and not a follower? Or is he saying that Vic himself is the leader and not the follower? Is he implying, then, that Kinsky is the follower?
Whatever it is, no matter how you spin it, it is a self serving post by Vicario at a time when everyone is talking about and praising Kinsky, who battled back from serious adversity after the way he was treated by Igor Tudor in that infamous Atletico Madrid game. And then he helped save Tottenham.
So at a time when everyone should be celebrating Kinsky, Vicario decided to make it about him with a strange post. If he meant to congratulate Kinsky, he could have done it with a real post celebrating his teammate. But because he chose the cryptic route with the all black background, no matter what plausible deniability he attempts to invoke, everyone can tell what he is really saying. And Tottenham cannot get rid of this fake leader and massive disappointment soon enough.
