Tottenham Hotspur star center back Cristian Romero was already on the bad side of the fans for a subpar 2025/26 season and for being the captain in the club's worst ever season in history, but there were still a lot of people backing him and not wanting to hear anything negative spoken about their captain. After all, Romero is their best player on his day and one of the top center backs in the Premier League, even if his reputation has taken a bit of a hit this season.
But with Romero leaving the club to watch a match in the Argentinian top flight this weekend instead of being around his teammates as captain for their do or die battle for Premier League survival against Everton on Sunday, there can be no defense or justification. Romero is letting his teammates down and acting like someone who does not care about Spurs, confirming a lot of what fans were noticing with some of his lackluster performances on the pitch before a season ending injury.
Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle was a tremendous player for the club who won two FA Cups and many more Team of the Season honors in the English top flight during the 1980s, so when he speaks up about a player not doing their part, Tottenham fans are absolutely listening.
Cristian Romero has lost all clout
Hoddle blasted Cristian Romero for being a poor leader and compared his actions to what he has seen in the past as a player and manager for Tottenham Hotspur. His remarks on Romero were scathing, to somehow put it kindly, and with comments like these from a club legend, it's clear that there is a point of no return for the captain.
He said, via The Spurs Watch, "It sums his selfishness up. He can't be a captain and act like that. If it was for his family or something like that then fine but if this is true that he's going back to watch a football match, then let him stay in Argentina and get as much money for him as possible. When I think back to the captains I played for and the great captains who went before me, the pride that you have in being captain of Tottenham. Wow. It's absolutely scandalous. It sums up his character. He's saying let's all pull together. Ha. He's just shown his true colours. Incredible decision. Call himself a captain?!"
The Spurs faithful are looking at these remarks from Glenn Hoddle and nodding in agreement, because it sums up exactly how they feel about Romero. Even before this fiasco, Romero was already in discussions for being the worst captain in club history with all that Spurs have gone through this season, and now with Hoddle unloading on him, that belief will only become a core one for Spurs fans once the season officially ends.
