Tottenham Hotspur came into the season with a lot of people hyping them as a team that could immediately turn things around and get back into the top five and one of the Champions League places for the 2027/28 campaign, but the start of the season has proven that these lofty goals were probably too much, too soon.
Spurs are stlll looking for their first win of the 2026/27 campaign, and even though they have tied their last two Premier League games and the improvements in their play are noticeable under Roberto De Zerbi, the progress has been slower than a lot of bullish fans thought.
While Tottenham legend Gareth Bale is hopeful that Champions League football is on the horizon for Spurs, the Welsh international had a much more measured take than a lot of his fellow former players did before the season; he thinks people should be lowering their expectations to something more realistic for now.
Tottenham won't be an overnight success
Bale said, via Arabic Spurs, "I hope so. Expectations should probably be lowered a bit, especially given the fact that we've finished the season in 17th place over the last two seasons. But there was a need for improvement, and they have the players capable of achieving that. I hope they gel together and start pushing forward."
Every single Tottenham Hotspur fan is hoping for that from the club, that they will gel together and make a push forward for a top five spot in the Premier League, finally bagging some wins - and goals - this season.
But at the same time, you just don't usually go from 17th to 5th immediately, even if you are a massive club like Tottenham, spent 400 million pounds in the summer transfer window, and recently hired one of the league's best managers in Roberto De Zerbi.
Gareth Bale has been around the block for years, and he has been on winning and losing teams in his career. He knows what it takes to build a winner and that these things don't happen overnight. More realistic expectations for Spurs will be a lot better for De Zerbi, the players, and the organization as a whole. Because the last thing the club needs is for fans to turn on a growing project that is showing early signs of success and bail on a manager like De Zerbi who could be even better for Spurs than what Mikel Arteta has been down the road for rivals Arsenal.
