Tottenham's turbulent season continues, with manager Ange Postecoglou under pressure as the team languishes in the lower half of the Premier League table.
Despite a string of poor results, the Spurs fanbase seems more divided than ever about the direction of the club.
Many supporters are backing the Australian coach, recognising the attacking football he has brought to North London as a major positive, even if the consistency hasn’t followed.
Postecoglou’s high-octane style has been praised for revitalising the team’s approach, but it has also left the team vulnerable defensively.
Andros Townsend has expressed his respect for Ange Postecoglou
Former Spurs winger Andros Townsend has weighed in on the debate, arguing that the team should give Postecoglou time to turn things around.
According to Townsend, while Tottenham’s results haven’t been what fans hoped for, there is a positive shift in the way the team plays.
The 33-year-old believes that, despite the disappointing outcomes, Spurs are playing more attacking football than they have in years, something fans were desperately craving under previous managers like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
In an interview with The Mirror, Townsend said, "The way Spurs were before under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, no disrespect, but supporters were crying out for attacking football.
"I'm a Spurs fan, I've got loads of Spurs fans that are friends and the one thing they say is we don't care if we lose, we just want to be entertained. That's one thing that Postecoglou will do, he will entertain the fans and they play great football," Townsend further explained that Postecoglou’s style, although still inconsistent, has given fans hope with its attacking flair.
The historical defensive issue and injury woes
While the attacking play is exciting, Townsend believes Tottenham’s defensive struggles are down to a more deep-rooted problem.
"I think the consistency in how they dominate games and how they throw men forward and how attacking they are is there - it's just the consistency with results," he explained.
The 33-year-old pointed out that Tottenham’s open and aggressive play leaves them vulnerable when they are caught on the counter-attack.
With key defenders like Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven injured, Spurs have been forced to field makeshift players, making it even harder to maintain a solid defensive structure.
Despite these challenges, Townsend firmly believes that Postecoglou should remain in charge.
He says that the attacking style of play, even if results haven’t yet matched expectations, is the right approach for the club in the long run.
