Tottenham will be headed to the Champions League again next season after taking down Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League Final, and their first order of business should be to keep left winger Mathys Tel on a permanent basis.
Tel joined Spurs in the January transfer window as a loan signing from the mighty Bayern Munich, and while he wasn't a regular in the starting lineup, the Frenchman became a key role player down the stretch of the season, including the Europa League title fight, especially after Son Heung-min was sidelined with a foot injury.
There is a lot of optimism within the building that Tottenham will be able to keep Tel from Bayern this summer for less than the 55 million euros in his option to buy clause. Chairman Daniel Levy, for his part, is said to be sold on the idea of keeping the 20-year-old talent at Tottenham.
Mathys Tel could be a real bargain for Tottenham
According to information from BILD journalists Christian Falk and Tobias Altschaffl on the Bayern Insider podcast, Tottenham will likely sign Tel for less than the exit clause in his loan deal, even after Spurs secured Champions League football. Bayern would reportedly be happy to get 40 million euros for Tel, but the starting negotiation price could be as low as 30 million euros.
If Tottenham can get Tel for the foreseeable future for just 30-40 million euros instead of 50-60 million euros and effectively get close to a 50 percent discount, that would be a massive win for Spurs as they head into a summer window in which they may have to sell to buy other star players.
After signing Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray last summer before bringing in Tel this winter from Bayern, there's a school of thought that says that Levy and Tottenham are wisely transitioning to a transfer policy that focuses on signing undervalued young talents with the potential to become superstars in the future, and Tel certainly fits the bill in that regard.
On and off the pitch, Tel is showing that he wants to be a part of Tottenham in the coming years, and the taste of success with the Europa League title has to be another powerful motivator, though Tel was giving it his all even in the Premier League games when the season was already lost. Tottenham need to secure Tel at these prices, as he could prove to be one of the bargains of the summer 2025 market.
