Tottenham Hotspur have been after Savinho for nearly a year now, and fans are starting to wonder why it has been taking so long for Spurs to secure a deal. Last year, the story was that despite Savinho's interest and a lack of a starting role for him, Pep Guardiola and members of the board did not want to lose such a talented player yet - and Daniel Levy and Spurs were giving them very little financial incentive to consider otherwise.
This summer, the window began with Tottenham links to Savinho, and whlie they seemed rapid at first and even got fans' hopes up, the reality is that negotiations, while still existing, have been very ploding.
While Fabrizio Romano is insisting that Tottenham are still interested in Savinho and that the Manchester City winger remains near the top of the list of targets at the position, he also made a concession that will be concerning to Spurs fans, though not at all beyond what they had already been suspecting.
The Savinho deal has been slow to develop
According to Romano, as transcribed by Chris Cowlin, Manchester City are actually still going back and forth and deciding on if they want to sell Savinho at all, while Tottenham Hotspur are still waiting on their Premier League Big Six counterpart giving them the green light.
Romano said, “Tottenham remain very interested in Savinho. Tottenham keep working on the Savinho deal. They’re waiting for Manchester City to take a decision on Savinho – whether they want to let him go or not, and under which condition. But the conversations have started. The conversation is ongoing. Savinho is the next big name on their list, I would include also Cody Gakpo among the players they like at the winger position after reshaping the midfield with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.”
While ITKs covering Tottenham, who are slowly losing the trust they had with the fan base, were insistent that Savinho was a done deal and soon would be closed, Romano's version of events, aside from coming from a more reliable source, match up more with the time line and the reality that Tottenham are still no closer to signing Savinho than they were at the beginning of the summer.
Since then, Spurs have sealed the deal on two top midfielders, center back Jan Paul van Hecke, and even a new No. 2 goalkeeper in Czechia's Martin Dubravka. And still no Savinho. Now, Spurs are focusing more of their efforts on the attack after shoring up the defense and midfield, but if Savinho's deal is still slow to develop, Spurs may stop waiting on Man City and move on to Cody Gakpo or even Marcus Rashford, Bradley Barcola, and other alternatives.
