Tottenham Hotspur have settled their defense for Roberto De Zerbi with the signings of Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke. And now, they have turned their attention to the midfield, where they are pushing hard to sign stars Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes with additional eyes on the likes of Adam Wharton and Alex Scott.
But for many Tottenham fans, the biggest need in this squad besides more quality in the midfield is an attack that can actually create chances and score goals at a volume above a team toiling in the bottom half of the Premier League. Spurs only goal threat last season was Richarlison, and thanks to injuries to Mohammed Kudus, James Maddison, Xavi Simons, and Dejan Kulusevski, they did not have a create force either - and only Kudus was a valid threat on the wings.
So far, Tottenham have only been linked to Savinho of Manchester City at the forward positions, but for the longest time, they have been watching Monaco breakout star Maghnes Akliouche, who played well enough to make the French national team at the 2026 World Cup. Spurs had the opportunity to sign Akliouche last winter transfer window but passed up on it, and now they may regret it.
Maghnes Akliouche is expected to move this summer
Because according to a report from Fabrizio Romano, the Akliouche transfer race is on this summer, and it is not Tottenham Hotspur who are in the lead. (Really, they have shown very little interest thus far.) No, Fabrizio says that the No. 1 team in the race for the Monaco man is Ligue 1 giants PSG, who are ahead of two unnamed clubs in the Premier League, implying that even if Tottenham are in the race, they are not the only English side involved. Fab says Akliouche is expected to move this summer and approaches for him are "intensifying" with Monaco expecting formal bids "soon".
Tottenham are playing their cards right by trying to strategically build the team from ground up, starting with the defense, moving to the midfield, and presumably wrapping up the attack later with approaches for Savinho, maybe another winger, and then a much needed striker to lead the attack under Roberto De Zerbi.
But the Maghnes Akliouche update is a reminder of how quickly things can change on the market. Savinho is a better player and a bigger priority target for Akliouche, but make no mistake, if Akliouche can ball out against PSG in the Champions League and Ligue 1 and has the back to back Champions League winners interested, he is a big target. And he is a big target Spurs are missing out on. The truth is, Spurs do not have the pull of PSG or the other top clubs right now, and that matters a lot for forwards. They are going to have to work 10 times as hard if they want a big star for De Zerbi this summer.
