Even before Tottenham Hotspur had confirmed safety in the Premier League relegation battle and long before the June transfer window's opening, Spurs had already been hard at work on the transfer market with two veteran free agent signings reportedly sealed.
The first, center back Marcos Senesi, is indeed pretty much confirmed for Tottenham from Bournemouth with Cristian Romero fully expected to leave this summer and even Micky van de Ven and Luka Vuskovic involved in transfer rumors (and Spurs are also hoping to sell fourth choice center back Radu Dragusin).
But the second, Liverpool's iconic left back Andrew Robertson, is not a foregone conclusion to Tottenham after all. Because according to new information from Fabrizio Romano, even though Tottenham Hotspur are in "advanced talks" with Robertson, a deal is "close" but not completed, and Serie A giants Juventus, who are very familiar with Spurs in the transfer market, are interested in hijacking the Robertson transfer.
Andrew Robertson could join another top club
Spurs, with the help of former Juve executive Fabio Paratici, stole Randal Kolo Muani on loan from under the Bianconeri's noses on transfer deadline day last summer in a move they have since come to regret - and despite his terrible season, the Bianconeri are still after Kolo Muani from PSG this summer, just as they were last summer and even in the previous winter.
Robertson is not a player Tottenham fans want to sign, but there is a certain level of embarrassment when another club takes a player away from you when they are a seemingly sealed as a signing. And while Andrew Robertson, at age 32, seems to be finished as a top level player, he was close to joining Tottenham in the winter transfer window if Liverpool would have gotten Kostas Tsimikas back from his loan to Roma.
Now, per Fab, the ball is in Andy Robertson's court to choose between Juventus and Tottenham. There are pros and cons to both. Robbo can stay in England for Spurs, but he can play for Italy's biggest club and in the Europa League for Juventus. There are pros and cons to both, but it would be tough personally for a player to go back on giving his word to a club to sign somewhere else.
Spurs fans wouldn't be too burned up about it, though. If they were to replace Destiny Udogie, then they would rather sign someone better than Robertson. And in the case of Robertson as a backup, even though Souza is but a U21 prospect, the Brazilian showed enough quality in spurts since joining in the winter that Robertson may not be an upgrade over him learning the ropes.
