Tottenham Hotspur are going to be one of the most needy teams for an attacking player in the January transfer window, as they are battling in the bottom half of the Premier League and just sunk t to a new attacking low in an atrocious 0-0 draw with Brentford that has brought Thomas Frank one step closer to the brink of a, quite frankly, deserved sacking.
Spurs need a new left winger above all else, and what is especially funny about that is a certain former Tottenham left winger is actually about to officially hit the open transfer market this January window.
According to a report from transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Saudi Pro League giants Al Ittihad left winger Steve Bergwijn wants to jump ship from the Asian continent and head back to Europe for a new challenge. Per Fab, Bergwijn could leae the title contenders this January transfer window and there are actually "several clubs" who are keen. Some other clubs in the Middle East are interested in Bergwijn, but there are also reportedly European clubs with "genuine interest".
He can still be a star in Europe
Now, those European clubs are likely a step below the top five of Europe, and, almost certainly, Tottenham are not among the teams interested in the 28 year old Dutch forward. Bergwijn is still under 30 years old and technically in the prime of his career, but between 2019 and 2022 when he did play for Tottenham, he was pretty terrible and clearly did not belong at the top level of the English Premier League.
But Bergwijn is honestly better than wasting away his final peak years of football in the Saudi Pro League alongside Karim Benzema at Al Ittihad. He is legitimately one of the best goal scoring and creative wingers in the recent history of the Dutch Eredivisie from a productivity stand point, shining at PSV before and during his time at Spurs with multiple double digit assist seasons.
He was then arguably better after fully leaving Spurs for PSV's Dutch rivals Ajax, bagging 12 goals in back to back seasons for one of European football's most historic clubs. Bergwijn can legitimately play at the Champions League level for a team like Ajax or PSV that is outside the top five leagues, and there should be teams in the Netherlands, Turkey, and maybe even Italy and France going crazy for a productive winger like him.
The pathetic part is that those numbers at PSV and Ajax look crazy good compared to what Tottenham are getting out of their wingers. Obviously, Bergwijn to Spurs is not something to even remotely consider - Spurs need someone younger and better - but sticking to Bergwijn, it would be nice to see the former Spur back in Europe and playing well. The Saudi Pro League has nothing for him.
