Tottenham Hotspur are fully focused on incomings on the summer transfer window after finishing 17th in the Premier League for a second straight season and nearly getting relegated. Roberto De Zerbi has already landed three new defenders and is eyeing two big midfield signings in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, and that is not even getting into the attacking talent that Spurs will need to bring into the team this year.
But Spurs also have to be keenly aware of departures. Yves Bissouma is already one confirmed exit, but more players will have to go. Captain Cristian Romero and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario sale is a foregone conclusion, while loan signing Randal Kolo Muani is already gone and Joao Palhlinha looks increasingly likely to leave, too. Meanwhile, Lucas Bergvall and Luka Vuskovic have submitted transfer requests, while veterans Richarlison and even Rodrigo Bentancur appear to be expendable.
Another bubbling question is what to do with the four left backs who are now in the squad. Tottenham signed Andy Robertson, so they now have Souza, Destiny Udogie, and Djed Spence at left back. Souza's loan is likely, but Spurs fans are wondering if even three left backs are too many and if Udogie, despite his quality, could be expendable after proving unreliable last season due to a myriad of injuries (which have always been a huge problem for him).
Roberto De Zerbi sees Destiny Udogie in his plans
However, in his latest transfer update, Fabrizio Romano has assured Tottenham Hotspur supporters that Roberto De Zerbi considers, like Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven in the back line, as a key player for the long term project. There is, per Fab, "no chance" for Udogie to leave Tottenham this summer.
From a quality perspective and when adjusting for positional scarcity, Destiny Udogie really is that valuable and is one of the best young left backs in the Premier League. He is still not yet 24 years old even though he has been playing for several seasons at the top level between Serie A and the Premier League.
There is no question that when the Italian international is fully healthy, he is a great player and the best man for the left back job. Udogie's ball progression and technical ability far exceed both Djed Spence and this late career version of Andry Robertson, and Souza is not yet ready to challenge the former Udinese man for the starting job.
Roberto De Zerbi is probably going to really like Udogie, and it would make way more sense for him to work with Udogie first than to sanction a sale, especially since injury luck seems to be the only question for him - and it is the question for most Tottenham players.
