Tottenham Hotspur star center back Cristian Romero is having a whale of a World Cup, recently scoring a vital goal in the Round of 16 to help Argentina survive another controversy and an upset bid from Egypt. Romero was excellent on the ball and on the defensive end, too, as he continues to boost his transfer value with another strong World Cup after already being among the reigning champions of 2022.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are looking to sell Romero. He embittered the fan base after a poor showing as a leader and captain, playing his worst football when Spurs needed him the most during the Premier League relegation battle. And last summer before he was named captain to replace a true legend in Son Heung-min, he was already openly talking about leaving for a big La Liga club with Atletico Madrid highly interested.

In preparation for Romero's departure, Tottenham have already signed compatriot Marcos Senesi and Dutchman Jan Paul van Hecke from other Premier League clubs that outperformed Spurs last season. So it may just be a matter of time and the World Cup ending for Romero to go.

Cristian Romero is getting more interest

According to Fabrizio Romano in his latest transfer update on the situation, "several big clubs" are now interested in Cristian Romero after watching his displays at the 2026 World Cup. Romano says that it is not just the clubs in Spain - he has already mentioned Barcelona and Atletico Madrid as the most likely landing spots for Cuti - but also Italian sides are interested in bringing Romero back to Serie A, where he used to be a top player for Atalanta (and a Juventus prospect before that). Fab says that the market surrounding Romero is likely to accelerate in a few weeks.

After the World Cup ends - and depending on what else Romero and Argentina do that the tournament - the center back's transfer market and interest will really explode. Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan are all big clubs that could be circling Romero as a dream signing, especially if Inter end up selling Alessandro Bastoni to Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho, needing a ball playing center back to replace the Italian international.

Romero is coveted highly by many, but Tottenham Hotspur will not fear of missing out here. They already know who Romero is: an immensely talented player who is inconsistent, flawed, and not the kind of player who is buying in to them, even under Roberto De Zerbi. They were already fooled once last year.
