Although the Netherlands were met with another heartbreaking early exit in the World Cup this year, Cody Gakpo proved to be a national team hero yet again for the Oranje in a big tournament. The Liverpool winger erased the memory of his poor 2025/26 Premier League season with three goals and an assist in four games this summer, providing the ruthlesness and goal threat that have marked his young career at multiple clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a new left winger, and they really need more goals and assists as a team above all else. Gakpo is a Premier League champion and used to light up the stat sheet at PSV back when he was "the guy", and as he has shown at the last World Cup and European Championship, he knows how to find the back of the net in the big games.
Already linked to Gakpo this transfer window, Spurs appear to be genuinely interested in the 27 year old Liverpool man. According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham want to sign Cody Gakpo, and while Liverpool currently are not opening the door to his exit by telling him to leave or green lighting negotiations with Spurs, Fab cautions not to rule out the possibility of a deal happening later on in the window.
Cody Gakpo is a real possibility for Tottenham
Romano said of the situation between Gakpo and Tottenham Hotspur, via Chris Cowlin, “Keep an eye on Tottenham for Cody Gakpo because Tottenham have interest in the player. Then, I can tell you, that Liverpool, as of today, beginning of July, are not opening the door to an exit. So, at the moment, Liverpool are not telling Gakpo, ‘Okay, you can leave’, are not telling Tottenham, ‘Okay, let’s negotiate’. That is not happening right now. So, at the moment, the door is closed from Liverpool, but we have to see later on this summer in case Tottenham really open talks by sending a proposal. At the moment, it is an interest. If they send a proposal, we have to see what’s going to happen there. So, it’s a story to keep an eye on eventually. It’s not something guaranteed at this stage.”
Many Liverpool fans are hoping Arne Slot ends his infatuation with Gakpo and uses him as a financial makeweight after the club spent so much on Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, and Alexander Isak last season, only to get even worse because of the loss of a true out and out explosive left winger in Luis Diaz, who just won the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich.
If Gakpo is available, you would have to imagine that Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham will make a bid for him as a rotational piece and a different kind of profile in the lineup to traditional left winger Savinho and the young and dynamic Mathys Tel.
