Tottenham Hotspur were supposed to be one of the most active teams in the winter transfer window this year, and while they were in some ways, they were not in the most important ways. Spurs sold Brennan Johnson, took a punt on Souza at left back, signed Conor Gallagher, and maneuevered a few loans around, but they really only signed one new first team player in Gallagher.
Spurs came into the winter transfer session with a litany of needs across their roster, and they technically did not fill a single one of them. Gallagher ended up being a useful replacement signing, but not for the player who was injured before his transfer, Rodrigo Bentancur, but rather for the No. 8 Spurs lost afterwards in Lucas Bergvall.
Tottenham do not have ready made cover at left back for Destiny Udogie, since the new addition, Souza, is going to be too raw to trust. And it looks like Andrew Robertson probably won't be joining from Liverpool. The attack is now ravaged by injuries, and Tottenham do not look ready to bring in anybody to help the situation.
Tottenham are getting beat by Inter Milan again
Meanwhile, Spurs already still needed a playmaking midfielder in the No. 6 role after the Conor Gallagher signing, and now with Bergvall out, they probably need two midfielders. It is doubtful, however, if Spurs will even sign one.
According to a new report from Fabrizio Romano, the main center midfield transfer target Tottenham Hotspur were still looking at in the final week on the transfer window is negotiating with another big club. Per Fab, Inter Milan have opened up club to club conversations with Premier League powerhouse Liverpool over a transfer for No. 8 Curtis Jones. They want to sign Jones to a loan deal with an option to buy clause as a potential replacement for the Nottingham Forest bound Davide Frattesi.
Skip the fact that Frattesi would have also been a decent buy for Tottenham - and much better than Gallagher - but if Spurs are truly interested in Jones, then it is embarrassing that they are not the ones sitting at the bargaining table and hammering out a deal with Liverpool for the talented young midfielder.
Jones is nowhere near world class, but he's a whole lot better than some of the players Spurs have been using this season, including the one they just signed in Gallagher. Inter and other clubs are running circles around Tottenham on the transfer market, and it is becoming patently obvious that this ownership does not care about competing in the Premier League anymore.
