Tottenham Hotspur only signed one experienced player to their squad in the winter transfer window despite a litany of needs, bringing in veteran center midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for 40 million euros. Spurs broke their wage structure and overpaid handsomely to sign Gallagher away from Aston Villa in the aftermath of Rodrigo Bentancur's injury, all because they liked the fact that Gallagher used to play in the Premier League for rivals Crystal Palace and Chelsea.
That transfer has predictably gone south, and while Spurs do have two great young midfielders in Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, they don't have a whole lot else to like in the middle of the park. Pape Matar Sarr is a rotational player, Joao Palhinha is unlikely to stay, and Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are two more veterans on the chopping block.
So Spurs are going to be, in all likelihood, after another talented young center midfielder this summer transfer window, but they will have to stay up in the Premier League. Now, issues in the midfield are nothing new for Spurs, and they even had to convert another Swedish star, right winger Dejan Kulusevski, into a No. 8 role during the 2024/25 season because they were so thin on credible midfield players.
Hugo Larsson is getting offers from around Europe
Perhaps a third Swedish star would interest Spurs in summer 2026. According to a new report from top transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Eintracht Frankfurt are expected to field offers for Hugo Larsson, and Fab says that clubs in the Premier League and La Liga have already made approaches to the Eagles for the player.
Larsson is part of an Eintracht side that disappointed profoundly this season. Despite a collection of great young players entering stardom, Frankfurt may not qualify for Europe this season and were horrendous in their return to the Champions League.
In all honesty, Larsson was among those who struggled in the big competition, and he also had a down year in the Bundesliga. But Larsson was also held back by a terrible team, forced to chase shadows and play too much defense.
He was great the year before, though, and he is just 21 with an intriguing all around skill set. He can progress the ball, play high quality defense, and pass crisply. Tottenham Hotspur have found success from Sweden in the country's biggest gem in Bergvall and their most reliable player in Kulusevski, and Larsson has high hopes for his future. He is a name worth thinking about this summer.
