Tottenham Hotspur are desperately trying to pawn off Guglielmo Vicario this summer transfer window. Not long ago, it seemed like Vicario would be destined to join Serie A champions Inter Milan as the replacement for Yann Sommer, and Spurs fans got excited when their bitter rivals Juventus wanted him, too, as a replacement for the deeply disappointing Michele Di Gregorio - who has become something of the second coming of Vicario in Italy.
Juve are still interested in Vicario, but they have cooled off their interest a bit, as they mostly wanted to sign Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez, though they have run into the roadblock of the World Cup's heroes expense.
Meanwhile, Inter have long since cooled their interest in Vicario, and, now, the dreams of an Inter vs. Juve bidding war increasing the price of Vicario on the transfer market and benefiting Tottenham are now officially over.
Tottenham are stuck in a tough spot
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Inter Milan have found a better and cheaper goalkeeper than Guglielmo Vicario to be their No. 2 next season in another relegation hero of the early 2020s, Ivan Provedel of Lazio (and formerly of La Spezia).
Provedel is one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A and has not, unlike Vicario or Michele Di Gregorio, considerably hurt his reputation. He is no longer a top keeper, but he is still very good and as qualified as they come to be a No. 2 for a Serie A champion.
The Nerazzurri's big interest in Lazio's Provedel is nothing new at all, but there was some doubt about his transfer going through due to the notorious Lazio front office trying to haggle an extra few million out of the deal. But Provedel's transfer has now gone through, with Inter Milan only having to pay three million euros, which is almost ten times less than the fee Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to get out of Vicario this summer.
Inter signing Provedel means that Juventus are now the only club reliably linked to the Tottenham backup, whose future is 100 percent out of the club after Spurs both committed a new contract to breakout star Antonin Kinsky while also signing veteran countryman Martin Dubravka as his backup.
Tottenham have to hope that more Serie A teams come out of the woodwork to challenge Juve and even light a fire under the biggest club in Italy. Who knows, maybe Fiorentina and Fabio Paratici will bail them out again after their loan deals for Manor Solomon and Radu Dragusin.
