Rafael Leao made a big statement to clubs, most specifically Tottenham Hotspur, linked to him this summer transfer window; he is still a top talent. The Portuguese international changed the game for his country in the 2-1 win over Croatia, assisting the winning goal to Goncalo Ramos with a pinpoint cross near the death of regular time while being the main attacking threat in one on ones on the left hand side.
Although Leao is a mercurial talent, he is exactly the sort of raw, big game player whom Roberto De Zerbi would love to coach and unleash. At AC Milan, Leao's stock has fallen and the media have crucified him, but they have forgotten that the 27 year old was the MVP of Serie A in 2021/22 when he pulled the Rossoneri up to the Scudetto again.
Tottenham are watching Leao as a possible candidate for a loan with an option to buy for 60-70 million euros, which would only be about what the club paid for Brighton center back Jan Paul van Hecke and less than what midfield compatriot Mateus Fernandes cost from West Ham United.
Rafael Leao is being courted by other clubs
In a new report, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Rafael Leao is indeed expected to leave AC Milan this summer transfer window and will be assessing his options after the 2026 World Cup, which is what Tottenham Hotspur supporters expected. Leao and Milan, as Romano reports, have already agreed that it is best for the two sides to part ways this summer.
But Tottenham fans have suspected that they will not be the only ones watching Leao. Per Fab, it is actually the clubs from the Saudi Pro League who have already begun their approaches, and while European clubs will start to get involved, Fab says that it is the clubs from Saudi that are starting first so far.
Although Leao is still in his prime and too good to give up on a career in European football and with a Champions League side, the Saudi Pro League can offer Leao a lot of money and a lot less media pressure, which has dampened his bright career thus far.
Tottenham will have to compete financially with the offers from Saudi, and while they do not have to match, say, what Al Hilal and Al Nassr offer to the Portuguese left winger, the competition from abroad will only raise the stakes and make a transfer for the marquee forward just a bit more diffcult for Roberto De Zerbi and Johan Lange to pull off.
