Djed Spence has been one of the surprise stories of the 2026 World Cup tournament, and the Tottenham Hotspur fullback is gunning to join Hugo Lloris and Cristian Romero as the next Spurs player to win the biggest prize in world football.
Many criticized Thomas Tuchel's decision to take Spence to the World Cup when Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold sat at home instead, but time has only vindicated the mercurial German manager and the, yes, backup Spurs fullback.
Capable of playing on either flank, Spence has emerged as one of the unsung heroes of the World Cup with his defensive performances for England in narrow wins over underdogs Mexico and Norway. Spence put his body on the line to make key blocks while racking up the tackles and even making nifty forays into the final third.
Djed Spence's World Cup is paying dividends
His displays have caught the eye of Serie A champions Inter Milan. Now, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Inter Milan are beginning to work on the signing of Djed Spence and that the England international is open to a transfer to the Nerazzurri this summer. Spence wants to play in the Champions League and be a starter, and with Pedro Porro shutting down shop on the right flank with an even better World Cup for Spain, Spence has a better opportunity at both with Inter, who just sold their star right wing back Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid.
So once the Spence rumors to Inter started up, Tottenham Hotspur fans knew it was only a matter of time before they heard word of the 25 year old fullback wanting to make a transfer abroad. And to be honest, Spurs will prefer Spence heading out of the Premier League entirely than staying back with another potential suitor, Everton, to haunt them twice per season.
Tottenham are in no hurry to sell, of course. Not only is Spence a versatile home grown player who holds value to them, but his transfer value is only going to increase if England make it to the World Cup - and especially if they are able to win the tournament.
Spence has been vital to Spurs thus far, and if he keeps producing clutch performances in England wins, Inter are going to pay Spurs a good sum of money to get this deal done. And if they are not willing to, someone else could swoop in and give Tottenham the money they are looking for.
