Tottenham Hotspur star center back Cristian Romero is almost 100 percent leaving N17 this summer transfer window, as his leadership as a captain was called into question and many Tottenham fans were left wondering about his commitment to the club. Romero had always seemed fully COYS, but after he asked to head to Argentina instead of supporting the club as captain in the relegatoin decider on Matchday 38 vs. Everton, the narrative totally turned on him.
Tellingly, even Roberto De Zerbi has not wanted to keep Romero when the Argentinian international has the perfect profile for him. But Romero had already pushed for a transfer in summer 2025 before Tottenham said no, mostly because Atletico Madrid and the other clubs he wanted to go to were low balling Spurs - but also because Romero got the captaincy and made the mistake of buying into Thomas Frank (most people did).
Now, Romero is coming off a sensational 2026 World Cup in which he was a Team of the Tournament caliber center back, which means Tottenham Hotspur fans are hoping the club can get a lot more than the 40 million euros Atleti were offering last year in order to use Romero's sale to fund the forwards the club desperately needs.
Tottenham need to sell big
According to new information from Fabrizio Romano, Inter Milan are interested in bringing their former Juventus rival and have now begun direct contacts with the reps of Cristian Romero. The probelm for Inter is that Romano says Romero is "expensive", but he adds that Inter are "trying" to get a deal done while they embark upon ongoing talks.
Inter are also interested in another Tottenham Hotspur defender in Djed Spence, but with the heart he showed and how well he played for the England national team in their third place finish this summer, Spurs fans are hoping he stays.
And there are still a few, especially the old guard of the likes of Tim Sherwood, who want Romero to stay, too. But it really seems like that ship has sailed, and, at this point, what Tottenham fans want to hear the most is that Romero will go for a big fee and that Spurs simply are not going to sell the guy for pennies.
It is tough since the clubs like Barca, Atleti, and Inter that want him are big clubs but do not spend the most money. Everyone knows Tottenham are going to sell Romero, so it is reassuring to hear Fab imply that they are going to try and sell big still.
