The chickens will soon come to roost for Tottenham Hotspur, and if Roberto De Zerbi cannot pull the miracle he was, in part, hired to do, then Spurs are going to unceremoniously dump themselves into the EFL Championship as their just punishment for years of negligence and mismanagement.
Spurs supporters do not deserve one bit of this, but they are all emotionally prepared already for what seems like an inevitability, simply judging by how putrid the performances are getting with each passing week. Even a match against 20th placed Wolves, who just lost 4-0 to another team in the relegation fight in West Ham United, seems like an expected loss for this team.
Captain Cristian Romero may have already played his last minute in a Tottenham jersey, as he went down with a serious knee injury after a disgusting, cynical foul from Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey.
Cristian Romero is toast
In his latest update, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano fanned the flames of a Romero transfer this summer even more, via The Spurs Watch. Per Romano, the feeling around both the people in Romero's camp and around Tottenham Hotspur is that the Argentinian international will be leaving this summer and that it is time to move on. It is a mutual sentiment from both sides of the chamber.
At this point, it would be a shocking upset if Cristian Romero were to stay at Tottenham. That feels like an even more inevitable conclusion than relegation, because regardless of whether or not Spurs stay up, Romero seems like a goner. And he had already been strongly contemplating leaving last summer to La Liga with Atletico Madrid highly interested, but Daniel Levy was able to convince him to stay.
Romero probably regrets staying at this point, and while he was one of Spurs top three players this season, that really isn't saying much. And as an ersatz for Son Heung-min with the captain's armband around him, Romero has been quite disappointing in that regard. Many Spurs fans feel he is one of their least effective captains in recent memory and part of the problem behind this collapse with 14 winless games in a row in the Premier League.
How much money Spurs can get out of Romero is then the real question, because Spurs are potentially headed for relegation and everyone knows he is on his way out. All Romero is doing is going a step away from confirming what the writing on the wall already has read out for us all to see.
